This Coach Mac Memorial Scholarship Endowment was established in memory of Bill “Coach Mac” McCartney, whose legacy at the University of Colorado is one of inspiration, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Taking the helm as head coach in 1982, he spent 13 seasons transforming the Buffaloes into a national powerhouse. Under his guidance, CU claimed the 1990 National Championship, secured three Big Eight Conference titles, and he was honored with multiple Coach of the Year awards in 1989.
His vision and relentless pursuit of excellence cemented him as one of the most visible and successful head coaches in CU history. Beyond the field, Coach Mac’s impact resonated in the lives of those he touched. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and mentor, he embodied the values of faith, perseverance, and integrity. His impact extended far beyond the game of football, he shaped young men into leaders, inspired a community, and left a profound mark on the University and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
